How to Check Your Home for Mold on Your Own

1. Turn on the magnifier function on your phone

Use your phone’s magnifier feature to examine small spots or imperfections on walls that could be signs of mold. This is especially useful for hard-to-reach areas or when checking for small surface defects.

How to turn on the magnifier function:

- On iPhone: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier and enable it.

- On Android: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Magnification and activate the relevant options.

2. Check the bathroom

The bathroom is one of the most vulnerable areas for mold due to constant humidity.

- Areas to inspect: Corners between walls and ceiling, tile grout, around the sink, shower, and bathtub. Pay attention to caulk lines—if they start turning black, it may be mold.

- Check ventilation: Poor ventilation fosters mold growth. Ensure your fan is working properly.

3. Check windows

Windows are another problem area, especially if they're not sealed properly.

- Condensation: Check if condensation forms on the windows. Wet areas around the frame can be mold-prone.

- Inspect seals: Mold often accumulates on rubber seals of window frames, especially if they’re damaged.

- Look at the windowsill: Moisture may collect on the windowsill and around the window reveals, where mold can develop over time.

4. Check external walls behind furniture and in corners

Mold often forms in places with poor air circulation, such as room corners and spaces behind furniture.

- Corners and behind furniture: Move furniture away from the walls and inspect the corners. Mold may build up here, especially if walls are not insulated or poorly ventilated.

- Dark spots: Look for dark, slightly altered areas on the wall. Spots can be brown, black, or green, depending on the type of mold.

Additional Tips

- Smell: If you notice a musty or damp smell in the house, this could be an indirect sign of mold.
